Roy City Police Release Body Camera Footage of Fatal Gas Station Encounter

Roy, Utah — In February, a deadly confrontation unfolded at a gas station in Roy City involving two police officers and a trespassing suspect. The Roy City Police Department has now released body-worn camera footage of the incident, providing a detailed view of the moments leading up to the fatal shooting of 39-year-old Nicholas Sanchez.

According to the department, the incident began when officers responded to a report of a suspicious individual at a local gas station. The store clerk had contacted dispatch, stating that a man—later identified as Sanchez—was trespassing on the property and refusing to leave despite being asked multiple times. The caller expressed concern about the man’s behavior and requested law enforcement assistance to remove him from the premises.

Two Roy City police officers were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they encountered Sanchez in the parking lot near one of the gas pumps. The officers initially attempted to engage him in conversation, asking him to identify himself and explain why he was on the property. Body camera footage shows the officers speaking in calm but firm tones, requesting compliance and attempting to de-escalate the situation.

Sanchez, however, became uncooperative and increasingly agitated. According to the footage and officer statements, he refused to provide identification and began moving away from the officers despite repeated commands to stop. As tensions escalated, one officer attempted to physically detain Sanchez, leading to a brief but intense struggle on the ground.

During the scuffle, officers discovered that Sanchez was armed. A firearm was reportedly concealed on his person, and in the heat of the struggle, one of the officers managed to wrestle the weapon away from him. The altercation continued, with Sanchez still resisting arrest and attempting to regain control of the situation.

Moments later, the situation turned deadly. The footage shows one of the officers—now in possession of Sanchez’s firearm—firing a single shot. Sanchez was struck and critically wounded. Officers immediately called for emergency medical services and began rendering aid at the scene. Despite their efforts, Sanchez succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

The firearm used in the shooting was confirmed to have been taken from Sanchez during the encounter. According to a statement from Roy City Police Chief Carl Merino, the decision to use lethal force came only after Sanchez posed a significant threat to officer safety during the physical altercation.

“Officers were faced with a rapidly evolving situation where the suspect was armed and resisting arrest,” said Chief Merino. “The use of force was a last resort after other options had failed. This tragic outcome underscores the dangers our officers face every day.”

The officer who fired the fatal shot has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of a full investigation. As is standard procedure, the case is now being reviewed by the Weber County Attorney’s Office and an independent critical incident task force.

The release of the body camera footage comes amid ongoing public calls for transparency and accountability in law enforcement use-of-force cases. The footage, while edited for privacy and length, provides a clearer understanding of the sequence of events and the challenges officers faced in the field.

Nicholas Sanchez had a prior criminal history, including previous arrests involving weapons charges. However, police emphasized that their response at the gas station was based solely on the circumstances of that day and not his past record.

Community responses to the footage have been mixed, with some residents expressing support for the officers’ actions, citing the threat posed by an armed and noncompliant suspect. Others have called for deeper investigation into police training and the use of force during confrontations involving mental health or substance-related issues.

The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have pledged to provide additional updates as more information becomes available and as the review process moves forward.
