Maricopa Police Shoot Wanted Man After He Fires at Officers
Maricopa, Arizona — A violent confrontation unfolded on the afternoon of February 27, 2025, when Maricopa Police officers attempted to apprehend a man with multiple outstanding warrants at a busy gas station. The suspect, 38-year-old Keith Prock, was spotted around 2:50 p.m. at the Circle K convenience store located at the intersection of Bowlin Road and John Wayne Parkway.
According to police reports and public records, Prock had several active warrants, including one stemming from a 2024 fentanyl-related arrest. Officers recognized him while conducting routine patrol duties in the area and attempted to approach him. However, upon realizing that police were closing in, Prock fled on foot from the gas station.
As officers pursued him, Prock reportedly pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots at one of the officers chasing him. The situation escalated rapidly as officers were forced to take immediate action to protect themselves and nearby civilians. The initial pursuing officer, who was struck by gunfire, collapsed at the scene and was quickly attended to by fellow officers.
A second officer joined the foot pursuit, continuing after Prock through the commercial area. As Prock continued to run, still armed, the second officer returned fire, discharging several rounds in an attempt to stop the active threat. Meanwhile, a detective with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, who happened to be nearby in an unmarked vehicle, joined the encounter. From the passenger seat of the vehicle, the detective also fired at Prock, adding to the exchange of gunfire.
The situation ended within minutes. Prock was struck by gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency medical personnel. Law enforcement quickly secured the area, which had been active with civilian traffic and bystanders at the time of the incident. Authorities ensured that no other members of the public were injured during the exchange.
The officer who had been shot was transported to a hospital in the Valley, where he received immediate treatment. As of the latest update, he remains in stable condition, and officials expect him to recover. His name has not yet been released publicly.
Investigators with the Maricopa Police Department, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, and Arizona Department of Public Safety immediately launched a joint investigation into the incident. Initial findings revealed that Keith Prock had a long and violent criminal history, with numerous prior arrests. Law enforcement sources have confirmed that Prock had known gang affiliations, and his background included crimes involving weapons, narcotics, and prior assaults.
Authorities also recovered Prock’s firearm from the scene, which will undergo ballistics testing to confirm the number of shots fired and to compare it with casings found on the ground. Surveillance footage from the Circle K and nearby businesses is also being reviewed to better understand the precise sequence of events and to support the official investigation.
Residents of Maricopa expressed both concern and relief following the incident. While many were alarmed at the presence of gunfire in a busy commercial district, they also praised the quick response of officers and the removal of what police described as a dangerous and armed individual from the streets.
The officer-involved shooting is being reviewed according to standard protocol, and the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The Maricopa Police Department has pledged full transparency and is working closely with oversight bodies to ensure all procedures were followed.
This incident underscores the continued challenges law enforcement faces when attempting to apprehend armed fugitives, especially those with violent criminal pasts, and highlights the dangers officers confront in the line of duty on a daily basis.
