Las Vegas Police Shoot Stabbing Suspect Fleeing Officers

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police have released body-worn camera footage capturing the moments before a stabbing suspect was shot by officers following a chaotic pursuit last Friday. The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Caleb Hill, was involved in two separate unprovoked knife attacks that left two women injured near a bus stop on Rainbow Boulevard and Spring Mountain Road.

The incident unfolded shortly before 1 p.m. on Friday when officers responded to reports of a stabbing on a public RTC bus. According to authorities, Hill attacked a woman on board without any warning or provocation. After fleeing the bus, he reportedly approached and stabbed another woman nearby. Both victims were rushed to the hospital and have since been released, police confirmed during a press conference held Monday.

Bodycam video released during the briefing shows a tense encounter between Hill and responding officers. As officers approach the suspect, they repeatedly shout, “Drop the knife!” and “Put the knife down!” Despite the clear and repeated commands, Hill continues to run, clutching a large knife in his hand. The video shows officers deploying several non-lethal methods in an attempt to subdue him.

One officer fires a Taser, which strikes Hill’s backpack but fails to incapacitate him. Following that, five bean bag rounds are deployed in succession. However, these measures also prove ineffective, as Hill continues moving away from officers, ignoring commands and holding onto the weapon.

According to police officials, Hill has an extensive criminal history that dates back to 1998. His record includes charges of battery, possession of stolen property, and numerous drug-related offenses. Las Vegas police indicated that there may have been illicit substances in Hill’s system during the encounter, but toxicology results are still pending.

As the chase continues, officers are faced with a difficult decision. With the suspect failing to comply, still armed, and after having already stabbed two individuals, the situation escalates. Ultimately, officers fire their weapons, striking Hill. He was quickly taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital.

As of Monday, Hill remains in critical but stable condition. He is facing two counts of attempted murder and one count of resisting a public officer. Police emphasized that the attack appeared to be entirely unprovoked and that neither of the two victims knew Hill prior to the stabbings.

Assistant Sheriff Jamie Prosser spoke during Monday’s press conference, explaining the sequence of events and defending the officers’ response. Prosser stressed that officers made every effort to de-escalate the situation through repeated verbal warnings and non-lethal force options. “We exhausted less-lethal methods before moving to deadly force,” Prosser said. “This was a rapidly evolving, dangerous situation with an armed and violent suspect.”

The department’s decision to release the footage was part of its commitment to transparency and community trust, Prosser added. The video not only highlights the dangers officers face but also the protocols they follow in attempting to resolve situations without resorting to lethal force when possible.

The incident has stirred discussions around public safety, mental health, and the ongoing challenge police departments face when dealing with individuals under the influence or experiencing a mental health crisis. While some community members are calling for an in-depth review of the shooting, police have reiterated that the use of force was necessary to protect the public and prevent further harm.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, with internal affairs and the department’s use-of-force review board set to evaluate whether the officers' actions were consistent with department policy. Additionally, the Clark County District Attorney’s Office will conduct a separate review to determine if the shooting was legally justified.

As the case develops, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department urges anyone with additional information or footage of the incident to come forward to assist with the investigation.
