Bodycam Footage Captures Police Shootout in Flagstaff, Arizona

Flagstaff, AZ — A late-night confrontation in a Walmart parking lot turned deadly Thursday when Flagstaff police officers fatally shot a man who reportedly opened fire on them. The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. at the Walmart located at 2601 E. Huntington Avenue, following a report of a man with a weapon in the store’s parking area.

Police responded to the call and found 29-year-old Sean D. Brady, a Flagstaff resident, sitting inside a pickup truck. Officer Pat Condon, one of the first on scene, approached the vehicle and ordered Brady to put his hands up and step out of the truck, according to an official statement from the Flagstaff Police Department.

However, instead of complying with commands, Brady allegedly drew a handgun and began shooting at Officer Condon. Fortunately, none of his shots struck the officer. Officers Dustin Hemp and Ryan Sherf arrived to assist and, along with Condon, returned fire. Multiple rounds were exchanged during the shootout.

Following the gunfire, Brady’s truck began to roll forward and eventually crashed into a nearby light pole. The vehicle came to a complete stop at that point. A SWAT team, which had been called to the scene, approached the truck with caution. Officers were able to remove Brady from the vehicle and called medics to provide assistance.

Emergency personnel attempted to treat Brady at the scene, but he was pronounced dead shortly afterward. The officers involved in the shooting were not injured during the exchange, and no civilians were harmed.

A search of Brady’s truck revealed a troubling stockpile of weapons and ammunition. According to police, inside the vehicle they found two rifles, one handgun, multiple boxes of ammunition, and several spent shell casings. Authorities have not yet released information about Brady’s motive or whether he had a history with law enforcement.

All three officers who discharged their weapons—Condon, Hemp, and Sherf—have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy. The leave is standard protocol following any officer-involved shooting and is not an indication of wrongdoing.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Flagstaff Police Department’s internal affairs unit will conduct separate investigations into the incident. These inquiries aim to determine whether the officers acted in line with policy and assess whether additional actions are required based on the findings.

Community reactions to the incident are beginning to emerge, with some expressing concern over the use of deadly force and others defending the officers’ response given the threat posed. Police Chief Dan Musselman has not yet released a full statement but assured the public that a transparent investigation will take place.

This is not the first time police have been called to reports of an armed person at a retail location, but officials noted that the presence of multiple weapons and spent casings inside Brady’s vehicle raises questions about his intent and mental state. At this point, authorities have not confirmed whether Brady was planning a larger attack or simply reacted violently to police presence.

The Walmart location where the shooting occurred was temporarily closed during the investigation but reopened the following day. Management has not commented publicly, but employees were visibly shaken by the event.

More details are expected to emerge as the investigation continues, including potential video footage from police body cameras and any statements from witnesses in the parking lot at the time of the shooting. For now, the city awaits answers while mourning another violent encounter that ended in tragedy.
