On July 11, 2018, a violent officer-involved shooting in Las Vegas followed a dangerous vehicle pursuit that stemmed from an attempted murder investigation earlier that morning. Assistant Sheriff Tim Kelly provided the media with additional details about the event during a press briefing, outlining a timeline of the incident and the police response.
The incident began at approximately 7:24 a.m., when patrol officers were dispatched in response to a report of an attempted murder. The victim in that case had been shot multiple times, prompting a citywide search for the suspects. According to witnesses and initial reports, two individuals were involved in the shooting. They fled the scene in a dark-colored early 2000s Ford Expedition, which was notable for its oversized wheels.
Just over two hours later, at approximately 9:30 a.m., police officers located the suspect vehicle near Constantine and Cooper Streets. As soon as the suspects were spotted, they refused to stop and instead fled the area at high speed. Officers engaged in a vehicle pursuit, which soon escalated into a highly dangerous and violent confrontation.
During the course of the pursuit, which spanned multiple city blocks, the suspects fired repeatedly at the pursuing officers. Assistant Sheriff Kelly confirmed that a total of 34 shots were discharged from the suspects’ vehicle toward police units. Several marked patrol cars were struck by gunfire during the chase, placing both officers and members of the public at significant risk.
The officers involved in the pursuit were later identified as Officer William Umana and Officer Paul Solomon of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. In response to the sustained gunfire from the suspects, the officers returned fire. Over the course of the pursuit and at its eventual conclusion, law enforcement officers fired a total of 32 rounds in an effort to neutralize the threat posed by the armed suspects.
The chase came to a dramatic end near the intersection of Ogden Avenue and 18th Street. It was at this location that the suspects’ vehicle was finally stopped and the confrontation reached its conclusion. Medical personnel were called to the scene immediately after the incident.
One of the suspects, 23-year-old Fidel Miranda, was pronounced dead at the scene by responding medical personnel. His injuries were consistent with gunshot wounds sustained during the exchange of fire with law enforcement. The second suspect, 30-year-old Rene Nunez, survived the incident but was found to have been injured. He was taken into custody at the scene and later received medical treatment for an apparent gunshot wound.
Both suspects were known to authorities, and their involvement in the earlier attempted murder incident significantly escalated the urgency of the response. The police emphasized that the level of violence and disregard for public safety displayed during the pursuit was extreme, and the decision to return fire was based on an immediate threat to officers’ lives.
Assistant Sheriff Kelly reiterated that the investigation into the shooting was ongoing, as is standard protocol in any officer-involved shooting. Body-worn camera footage and other evidence, including ballistics reports and vehicle damage assessments, were being reviewed as part of the internal investigation and for public transparency.
The incident highlights the dangers police officers face when responding to armed suspects and violent felonies. It also raises broader questions about the use of deadly force, officer training in high-risk pursuits, and community safety during such volatile incidents.
Law enforcement officials pledged to keep the public informed as more information becomes available and emphasized that transparency remains a top priority in incidents involving the use of force by police.
