Dashcam Footage Shows Dayton Police Cruiser Striking Suspect During Foot Pursuit

Dayton, Ohio — Dash camera footage released by the Dayton Police Department on Friday captures the dramatic conclusion of a police pursuit earlier in the week, showing a suspect being struck by a police cruiser while attempting to flee on foot. The incident occurred on Tuesday and involved 30-year-old Brandom Lamar Mann, who had been under investigation in connection with alleged illegal weapons activity.

The situation began the day before, when Dayton police officers attempted to stop a vehicle believed to be linked to illegal weapons dealing. However, the driver of the car—later identified as Mann—refused to stop and sped away, prompting officers to end the pursuit due to safety concerns. Authorities made a note of the vehicle and continued efforts to locate it.

On Tuesday, officers once again spotted the same vehicle and decided to initiate another traffic stop. The car initially pulled over but then quickly accelerated, sparking a second, more intense pursuit through city streets. Multiple police vehicles responded, and the entire chase was recorded by dash cameras mounted on police cruisers.

The chase led officers along Gettysburg Avenue, a busy stretch of road in Dayton. As the pursuit continued, Mann abruptly stopped the vehicle and jumped out, attempting to flee the scene on foot. The dashcam footage shows Mann running across lanes of traffic with officers in close pursuit.

In a sudden moment captured clearly on video, Mann ran in front of a pursuing police cruiser. Unable to stop in time, the cruiser struck him, causing Mann to fall to the ground. Officers quickly exited their vehicles, approached Mann, and provided aid. Emergency medical services were called to the scene, and Mann was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the collision.

After receiving medical care, Mann was released from the hospital and booked into the Montgomery County Jail. He now faces multiple charges stemming from the incident, including failure to comply with a police order, resisting arrest, and obstruction of official business. Police have also stated that the original investigation into alleged weapons trafficking is ongoing, though no charges related to weapons possession had been filed as of Friday.

In court later that same day, Mann appeared for an initial hearing related to the charge of failing to comply with a police order. During the hearing, no plea was entered. The judge set bond at $30,000, citing the nature of the chase and Mann’s prior failure to yield to officers. Mann is scheduled to return to court for a follow-up hearing on May 4.

Dayton Police officials addressed the release of the video footage by emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability. While some members of the public have expressed concern about the use of a police vehicle in what appeared to be a foot chase, the department has stated that the incident is under internal review. At this time, it has not been determined whether the officer driving the cruiser will face disciplinary action.

A police spokesperson noted that Mann appeared to run directly into the path of the moving vehicle, and the collision may not have been intentional. The department is expected to analyze the dashcam footage frame by frame as part of their internal investigation.

Community reactions to the incident have been mixed. Some residents expressed concern about the tactics used during the chase, while others defended the officers' actions, pointing out the suspect’s repeated refusal to comply with lawful commands. Local civil rights organizations have not yet issued formal statements but have requested that the full footage and review results be made public.

As of now, the investigation into both the suspect's actions and the officers’ response remains active. Dayton Police say additional updates will be provided as more facts become available.
