Cops Shoot Suspect As He Stabs His Mother
Bakersfield, California — August 13, 2021: A domestic disturbance call at a local apartment complex escalated into a fatal officer-involved shooting after a man reportedly armed with a knife refused to comply with law enforcement and allegedly attacked his mother inside their home. The incident, which took place in the 200 block of Stephens Drive, remains under investigation by the Bakersfield Police Department.
The initial 9-1-1 call was received at approximately 8:47 a.m. Callers reported hearing intense yelling and a possible altercation between a man and a woman within one of the apartments. One caller specifically noted that the male subject involved appeared to be under the influence of drugs. Over the next few minutes, multiple additional calls were received from nearby residents reporting a man screaming and acting erratically. These accounts raised serious concerns about a potential domestic violence situation in progress.
At 8:51 a.m., officers from the Bakersfield Police Department arrived at the scene and began investigating the disturbance. After locating the apartment in question, officers contacted a neighbor who provided critical information. According to the neighbor, the male suspect was inside the apartment with his mother. Alarmingly, the neighbor revealed that the mother had previously given her a bag full of knives to keep them away from her son, suggesting a fear for her safety and an escalating threat.
Officers quickly established a perimeter and attempted to make verbal contact with the individuals inside the apartment. Over the course of nearly an hour, police negotiators tried to persuade the male subject to allow his mother to exit the apartment so officers could verify her condition. Despite their efforts, the man refused to cooperate and continued shouting from inside. Officers observed that he was still armed with a knife and appeared to be agitated and possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Neighbors on scene informed officers that the residence had a known history of domestic violence incidents. Combined with the volatile behavior of the suspect and the earlier reports from the mother, this heightened officers' concerns for the woman’s immediate safety. Officers on the scene, including a designated witness officer wearing a body camera, recorded ongoing attempts to de-escalate the situation.
However, tensions reached a breaking point when officers, based on what they heard inside the apartment, believed the woman was being actively harmed. Yelling between the two continued to intensify, and officers feared that the male subject was attacking his mother. In response to the perceived imminent threat to her life, officers made the decision to forcibly enter the apartment.
Once inside, officers encountered the male suspect, who was still armed. In the confrontation that followed, three officers discharged their firearms. The suspect was struck multiple times. After securing the scene, officers immediately rendered medical aid and called for emergency medical services. Despite their efforts, the male suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Next to the suspect’s body, officers recovered multiple knives. These were later confirmed to have been in his possession during the confrontation. Meanwhile, the female victim — the suspect’s mother — was found suffering from several stab wounds. She was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Her current condition has not been released, but her injuries were reported to be serious.
The Bakersfield Police Department has launched a full investigation into the incident. Body-worn camera footage, physical evidence, and witness statements will be reviewed as part of the department’s standard protocol for officer-involved shootings. The names of the officers involved have not yet been released, pending further administrative review.
