Bodycam Shows Seattle Police Officers Shooting Homicide Suspect
Seattle Police and the King County Sheriff’s Office have launched concurrent investigations following a deadly early-morning incident in the Northgate neighborhood involving a domestic violence homicide and a fatal officer-involved shooting. The events unfolded shortly after 3:25 a.m. on Thursday when officers from the North Precinct responded to reports of a possible domestic violence situation at an apartment building located in the 10500 block of Midvale Avenue North.
According to officials, the initial 911 call and subsequent witness reports indicated a serious disturbance inside one of the third-floor units. Based on the urgency of the situation and information relayed to them by the Seattle Police Department (SPD) 911 Center, responding officers forced entry into the apartment to ensure the safety of anyone inside.
Upon entering, officers discovered a deceased woman in the apartment. Her identity has not yet been released pending notification of family members. As officers cleared the residence, they found four other individuals inside—two uninjured adults and two small children, a boy and a girl—who had been hiding in another room during the violent incident. The presence of children underscored the volatile and dangerous nature of the scene.
While continuing their search, officers encountered a man in one of the bedrooms armed with a large knife. Officers issued repeated commands for the man to drop the weapon. According to the body-worn camera footage, which has been reviewed by investigators, the suspect did not comply. When the suspect posed a direct threat, two officers discharged their service weapons, fatally striking the armed man. No officers were injured during the encounter.
Immediately after securing the scene, officers worked to remove the uninjured adults and children from the apartment. Seattle Fire Department personnel were called to the location and arrived shortly after the shooting. Despite efforts to provide medical assistance, both the deceased woman and the knife-wielding suspect were pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, the officers attempted life-saving measures on the suspect, and continued to ensure the safety and welfare of the family members who had been barricaded in a separate room. Their swift action likely prevented further tragedy, according to preliminary assessments.
The incident prompted a full-scale response from several units within the Seattle Police Department, including detectives from the Force Investigation Team, Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), and Homicide. Representatives from the Office of Police Accountability and the Office of the Inspector General were also present at the scene to ensure transparency and adherence to departmental protocols.
In accordance with Initiative 940, which mandates independent investigations into officer-involved shootings in Washington state, the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) was notified and has taken on an independent role in the ongoing investigation. KCSO detectives arrived at the scene shortly after the SPD investigation began and are conducting a parallel inquiry into the actions of the involved officers and the events that led up to the fatal shooting.
While much about the case remains under investigation, both agencies have confirmed that the officers involved were equipped with body-worn cameras, which captured the moments leading up to the shooting. The footage is being reviewed as part of the broader investigation and may be released to the public in the future depending on case developments.
This remains an active and evolving case. Authorities have not yet disclosed any information about the relationship between the deceased individuals or the motive behind the violence. Police continue to interview witnesses, collect evidence, and piece together a timeline of events to determine the exact sequence and nature of the tragedy.
Anyone with additional information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Seattle Police Department or the King County Sheriff’s Office as the investigation continues.
