Bodycam Footage Of Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Maryland
The Montgomery County Police Department has released body-worn camera footage of a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred in Silver Spring, Maryland, on June 11. The incident resulted in the death of 41-year-old Robert White and was later determined to be justified by the Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office following a thorough review of the evidence.
The shooting took place in the parking lot of a townhouse community, where Montgomery County Police Officer Anand Badgujar was responding to an unrelated call in the area. While on patrol, Officer Badgujar encountered White, whose behavior drew the officer’s attention. According to police reports, Badgujar attempted to initiate a conversation with White, but the interaction quickly escalated.
Authorities say that when Officer Badgujar approached White, the situation turned aggressive. White allegedly became combative and began to physically assault the officer. The body-worn camera footage, captured from both Officer Badgujar and a backup officer who later arrived on scene, documents the unfolding confrontation.
In the early stages of the encounter, Officer Badgujar attempted to defuse the situation by issuing verbal commands and using non-lethal force. At one point during the altercation, Badgujar deployed pepper spray in an attempt to subdue White. Despite being sprayed, police say White continued to attack the officer, showing no signs of backing down.
Faced with a persistent and violent assault, Officer Badgujar ultimately drew his firearm and fired multiple shots at White. The shooting occurred in the residential parking lot as nearby residents looked on. Emergency services were called to the scene, but White succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after the incident.
The Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office, which was assigned to independently investigate the shooting, reviewed all available evidence, including video footage, witness statements, and forensic reports. After completing the investigation, the office concluded that Officer Badgujar’s use of deadly force was legally justified given the circumstances.
“The evidence supports the conclusion that Officer Badgujar acted in defense of his own life and safety after being repeatedly assaulted,” the State’s Attorney’s Office said in a written statement. “While any loss of life is tragic, the facts of this case indicate that the officer responded with necessary and appropriate force in a life-threatening situation.”
The release of the body-worn camera footage was part of the Montgomery County Police Department’s effort to be transparent with the public. The video provides a clear view of the sequence of events leading up to the shooting and the escalating nature of the encounter. It also illustrates the challenges officers can face when dealing with uncooperative or aggressive individuals during seemingly routine interactions.
Chief Marcus Jones of the Montgomery County Police Department acknowledged the seriousness of the incident and the impact it has had on the community. He emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability, especially in cases involving deadly force.
“Our department remains committed to maintaining public trust,” Chief Jones said. “We know how important it is to share the facts and provide as much clarity as possible when incidents like this occur. Our officers are trained to make split-second decisions, and in this case, the evidence shows that Officer Badgujar was placed in a situation where he had to defend himself.”
The department also confirmed that Officer Badgujar will not face disciplinary action as a result of the incident. The case has been officially closed, though community discussions about use-of-force policies and officer conduct continue.
The death of Robert White adds to ongoing conversations nationwide about policing, mental health, and how officers interact with the public during street-level encounters. Montgomery County officials stated they will continue evaluating training and engagement protocols to ensure officers are equipped to handle volatile situations as safely and effectively as possible.
