Woman Gets Shot By Arizona Cops After Firing a Gun At Them

Phoenix, Arizona — July 8, 2020

On the morning of July 8, 2020, at approximately 6:56 a.m., the Phoenix Police Department was alerted to a potential firearms-related incident near a hotel located on 10400 N. Black Canyon Highway. The call came from a male individual who reported a volatile situation with his roommate. According to the 911 caller, his roommate had been "becoming crazy," and as a result, he had kicked her out of the apartment. The caller further explained that the woman had "shot a gun," though it was later confirmed that this gunfire had occurred outside of the apartment building.

Upon receiving the call, officers from the Phoenix Police Department immediately responded to the scene. All responding officers were equipped with body-worn cameras, which would later provide valuable footage of the unfolding events. When the officers arrived, they met with the 911 caller, who directed them to the location where the woman had allegedly discharged the firearm. The caller then spotted the woman near a parking lot on the north side of a nearby hotel and pointed her out to the officers. The woman was later identified as 24-year-old Jovana Kelsey McCreary.

Two officers and a sergeant approached McCreary, and one of the officers asked her if she had a firearm on her person. McCreary denied possessing a gun and also claimed that she had not discharged one. For nearly seven minutes, the officers engaged McCreary in conversation, attempting to assess the situation and determine her involvement in the earlier incident. During this time, the officers explained their intention to search her belongings. McCreary consented to the search, allowing officers to look through her bag.

During the search, the officers discovered ammunition inside McCreary's bag. Furthermore, they also uncovered illegal drugs, which raised additional concerns about her activities. In the course of the investigation, it was revealed that McCreary had an outstanding misdemeanor arrest warrant. At this point, one of the officers attempted to place McCreary into handcuffs. However, as the officer tried to take control of her, McCreary resisted and attempted to flee.

In the midst of the struggle, McCreary reached for a handgun tucked into her waistband. As she pulled the firearm from her waist, the officers quickly recognized the immediate threat to their safety. The situation escalated rapidly when McCreary fired the weapon, narrowly missing the officers in close proximity. In response to the threat, the officers drew their own weapons and fired at McCreary. She was struck twice by the officers' gunfire, and the impact caused her to drop the firearm and collapse to the ground.

Following the shooting, the officers on scene immediately began to administer first aid to McCreary. The Phoenix Fire Department responded quickly to the scene and took over medical care. McCreary was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Fortunately, despite the severity of her injuries, McCreary survived the incident. No officers or bystanders were harmed during the exchange of gunfire.

In the aftermath of the shooting, the officers involved in the incident were placed under administrative review, which is standard procedure following officer-involved shootings. The body camera footage played a crucial role in documenting the events and providing transparency about the officers' actions. The Phoenix Police Department, in conjunction with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the encounter. This investigation would include reviewing the body-worn camera footage, as well as interviewing witnesses and gathering forensic evidence.

As the investigation continued, it was revealed that McCreary’s criminal history included prior arrests and convictions, though she had not been wanted for a serious crime at the time of this incident. The discovery of drugs and ammunition, coupled with her resistance to arrest and the firing of a weapon, highlighted the dangers officers face when responding to potentially volatile situations.

While McCreary was fortunate to survive the gunshot wounds, the incident underscored the risks inherent in police work, especially when responding to situations involving firearms and individuals who may be under the influence of drugs or dealing with mental health issues. The Phoenix Police Department emphasized the importance of reviewing each case thoroughly to ensure that all actions taken by officers were justified and in line with department policies.Ultimately, the department's commitment to transparency, accountability, and thorough investigations would remain central as the case continued to unfold. The incident also highlighted the complexity of law enforcement interactions, where split-second decisions can result in life-or-death consequences.
