Suspect Shoots Kern County Deputy in the Hand During Gunfight

In the early morning hours of May 9, 2025, deputies with the Kern County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a potentially dangerous situation in the 600 block of Water Street in Bakersfield. The 911 call reported a male subject armed with multiple weapons, including a hammer, a machete, and a firearm. Diaz was visibly armed and, according to authorities, was in possession of a firearm. As deputies attempted to engage him, body-worn camera footage captured the tense moments when Diaz raised his firearm and pointed it directly at a deputy.In response to the perceived immediate threat, a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Diaz was struck by gunfire, but the confrontation did not end there. Despite being wounded, Diaz still managed to raise his weapon again and fired at deputies. One of the deputies was hit during this exchange, sustaining a gunshot wound to his hand. The injury was later confirmed to be non-life-threatening, and the deputy was transported to a local hospital where he received treatment and was subsequently released.

As the scene was being secured, deputies discovered a female victim who had also been injured. The woman informed officers that she had been shot by Diaz prior to their arrival. She was immediately provided medical attention and transported to the hospital for treatment of her injuries. Diaz was taken into custody at the scene and also transported to the hospital to receive medical care for the injuries he sustained during the shootout. Following his release from medical care, Diaz was formally arrested and now faces a wide array of serious felony charges. These include attempted murder, burglary, kidnapping, kidnapping with a firearm, assault on a peace officer, and carrying a loaded firearm without registration.

According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, the actions of Diaz posed an extreme threat not only to the responding deputies but also to members of the public in the area. The fact that he was reportedly armed with multiple weapons, including a gun he used against law enforcement and a civilian, heightened the urgency and danger of the situation.
