Suspect Points Pipe Shaped Like Shotgun at Officers and Gets Shot by LA Police

Officer-Involved Shooting in Los Angeles – June 5, 2025

Los Angeles, California — On Thursday, June 5, 2025, at approximately 9:10 AM, uniformed officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Olympic Patrol Division responded to an emergency radio call regarding a possible Assault with a Deadly Weapon (ADW) suspect. The call originated from the area of Western Avenue and Washington Boulevard, a heavily trafficked intersection in the central Los Angeles area. According to the initial call details, the suspect was reportedly pointing a mini-shotgun at passing vehicles, alarming members of the public and creating an immediate safety concern.Upon arrival, officers quickly began canvassing the area based on the witness descriptions provided. They located a male individual matching the description on the north sidewalk of 18th Street. The suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Roberto Gonzalez Flores, was visibly holding an object that appeared to be a sawed-off shotgun. Given the nature of the call and the potential for imminent danger, officers took immediate tactical precautions and began issuing loud verbal commands instructing Flores to drop the weapon.

Despite repeated and clear instructions, Flores did not comply with the officers’ commands. Instead, he proceeded to walk across the street to the south sidewalk, all while maintaining possession of the object. Upon reaching the opposite side of the street, he appeared to conceal the weapon in his waistband, increasing concern that he might attempt to flee or launch an assault on officers or nearby civilians.

A short time later, Flores removed the object from his waistband and pointed it in the direction of the officers. This action prompted an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) as officers, fearing for their safety and that of others in the vicinity, discharged their firearms at the suspect. Flores was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground. Officers approached and took him into custody without further resistance.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) was immediately requested and responded to the scene. Paramedics rendered aid to Flores on-site before transporting him to a local area hospital, where he received medical treatment for his injuries. As of the time of the report, no injuries were sustained by any officers or members of the public as a result of the incident.

Following standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the scene was secured, and investigators from the LAPD’s Force Investigation Division responded to begin a thorough review. During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the object Flores had brandished, which initially appeared to be a sawed-off shotgun, was actually a metal pipe. The pipe had been deliberately modified to closely resemble a firearm, contributing to the perception of a lethal threat.

The imitation weapon was recovered at the scene and booked into evidence. It will be examined further as part of the ongoing investigation to determine its construction, origin, and any possible criminal intent behind its design.

The LAPD’s investigation into this incident remains active and ongoing. As with all officer-involved shootings, a review will be conducted to determine whether the use of force was within policy and legally justified. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will also be involved in reviewing the case once the internal investigation is complete.
