Orlando Police Shoot Man Who Was Waving a Fake Gun at 7-Eleven
Orlando, Florida — May 1, 2025
On the evening of May 1, 2025, at around 5:47 p.m., the Orlando Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a man armed with a gun near a 7-Eleven located in the 4500 block of Conroy Road. Callers described a male subject behaving erratically in the store’s parking lot, with one witness stating that the suspect had pointed the firearm at another individual in what appeared to be a threatening manner.
Shortly after, surveillance footage from a nearby dry-cleaning business showed the same man walking inside the establishment with a visible firearm in his hand. The alarming nature of these incidents led officers to quickly respond to the area, concerned about the public’s safety and the potential for violence.
Responding officers canvassed the neighborhood and soon located the individual, later identified as 25-year-old Orlin Manuel Bueso Calderon. He was found in the parking lot of an apartment complex situated at 4620 Cason Cove Drive, not far from the original location of the reported incidents.
Upon locating Calderon, officers immediately began issuing verbal commands for him to drop the weapon. The commands were delivered in both English and Spanish, to ensure that he fully understood the directives and had every opportunity to comply. Despite the repeated orders, Calderon refused to disarm and did not respond to the officers’ instructions.
Given the imminent threat posed by an individual with a firearm who would not comply with lawful orders, the situation escalated. Officers, fearing for their safety and the safety of others nearby, discharged their weapons, striking Calderon. Medical assistance was called to the scene promptly, but despite emergency efforts, Calderon was pronounced deceased.
A firearm was recovered at the scene near Calderon’s body. However, upon further inspection by investigators, it was determined that the weapon was not real—it was a simulated firearm, sometimes referred to as a replica or imitation gun. Though it was not a functioning weapon, it closely resembled a real firearm and was perceived as such by witnesses and law enforcement during the unfolding events.
Investigators soon identified the suspect as Orlin Manuel Bueso Calderon, a 25-year-old man with a criminal record. His history included serious offenses such as aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon, as well as possession of cocaine. In addition to those prior charges, Calderon had also been arrested for various drug-related crimes and traffic violations.
As with all officer-involved shootings, the incident is undergoing a full investigation by the Orlando Police Department’s internal affairs division, in cooperation with external oversight bodies. The department has stated that body-worn camera footage from the involved officers will be reviewed and released to the public in accordance with transparency policies.
The Orlando Police Department expressed its commitment to ensuring accountability in use-of-force incidents while also emphasizing the difficult decisions officers are often forced to make in life-threatening situations. In this case, the realistic appearance of the replica firearm and Calderon’s refusal to comply with repeated commands contributed to a split-second decision with fatal consequences.
Community leaders and department officials have encouraged any witnesses or individuals with additional information to come forward as the investigation continues. The department has also reiterated the importance of public cooperation and awareness, especially in high-stakes scenarios where officers are tasked with making immediate judgments to protect lives.
As the review proceeds, the focus remains on determining all contributing factors and ensuring the events are thoroughly examined from every angle.
