Officer Shoots Fleeing Suspect as He Throws Away Gun

 Charlotte, North Carolina — February 8, 2024

On the morning of Thursday, February 8, 2024, at approximately 10:47 a.m., officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded to a call reporting an armed subject in the 2100 block of Beatties Ford Road. This area had been under active surveillance by the CMPD’s Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) as part of a broader effort to reduce crime in the city. Using the department’s advanced surveillance technology, members of the RTCC had spotted a male subject who appeared to be carrying a concealed firearm.

According to the footage, the subject, later identified as 33-year-old Timothy Deangelo Moore, was seen removing a firearm from the waistband of his clothing. Moore appeared to manipulate the weapon briefly before concealing it again. The RTCC team immediately alerted nearby officers about the armed individual, providing crucial information that would help them respond appropriately to the potential threat.

As CMPD officers arrived on the scene, they observed what appeared to be a drug transaction taking place in the parking lot. Moore was seen interacting with another individual, and both appeared engaged in illegal activity. The officers, familiar with Moore due to his prior encounters with the Metro Division, approached the situation with caution. Recognizing Moore as a known figure in the area, they began to close in on him.

As the officers got closer, Moore abruptly fled the scene on foot. Officers quickly gave verbal commands for Moore to stop and show his hands, urging him to comply. However, Moore did not comply and continued to flee, prompting a short pursuit on foot. During this pursuit, Moore reached for the firearm concealed in his waistband. As he turned his body toward the officers, the weapon became visible.

The officer who was closest to Moore perceived an imminent and lethal threat. Fearing for his safety, the officer discharged a single shot, striking Moore. The gunshot caused Moore to fall to the ground, and officers quickly moved in to secure him. They placed him into custody, recovered the firearm, and began providing first aid while waiting for medical assistance to arrive.

The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC responded promptly to the scene. Moore, who was conscious after the shooting, was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were determined to be non-life-threatening. The officers involved in the incident were unharmed, and no one else in the immediate vicinity was injured during the confrontation.

Once Moore was medically cleared and released from the hospital, he was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. He was formally charged with several offenses, including Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Resisting a Public Officer, and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. These charges stemmed from the events of that morning, in which Moore was found to be illegally in possession of a firearm despite his previous felony conviction.

Following his release from the hospital, Moore was taken to the Mecklenburg County Jail, where he awaited further legal proceedings. As of the most recent update, Moore has since been released on bail.

This incident is currently under review by the CMPD, in line with standard procedure for officer-involved shootings. Investigators are working to gather all relevant details, including the body-worn camera footage, to ensure the actions of the officers involved were in line with departmental policies. The department emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in incidents like this and reiterated that no officers were injured during the confrontation.

In addition to the legal charges Moore now faces, the CMPD continues its commitment to crime reduction in the Beatties Ford Road area. The use of surveillance technologies, like those employed by the RTCC, is an integral part of the department’s strategy to improve public safety and address crime patterns in real time
