New Orleans Police Officer Shoots Man With Knife Outside The Caesars Superdome
Police body camera footage later confirmed that Deeson was in possession of a walking cane and appeared to be holding an object that officers believed to be a knife. Officers observed Deeson assuming what they described as a “tactical stance,” which they interpreted as a sign of aggression. Despite repeated commands to drop the object, Deeson allegedly refused to comply and instead moved closer to the officers in a threatening manner.
According to official reports, officers again issued verbal commands ordering Deeson to disarm and remain where he was. At that point, police say that Deeson lunged forward at the officers, prompting Officer Romelo Noel to draw his service weapon. In an effort to neutralize the perceived threat without resorting to deadly force, Officer Noel fired a single shot, striking Deeson in the arm.
After the shot was fired, officers immediately moved in to disarm Deeson and secured the area. The video footage ends shortly after officers are seen calling for emergency medical services. Paramedics arrived on the scene shortly thereafter and transported Deeson to a nearby hospital for treatment of the non-life-threatening gunshot wound.Deeson has since recovered from the injury and has been charged with five counts of aggravated assault on a police officer as well as criminal trespassing related to the incident. Authorities noted that the situation could have escalated further had the officers not reacted swiftly and within departmental policy.
Further investigation into Deeson’s background revealed a history of violent criminal behavior, including a previous murder conviction in another state. Law enforcement officials confirmed that Deeson has a criminal record spanning several years, with offenses that include assault, resisting arrest, and illegal weapons possession.
Following the shooting, Officer Romelo Noel was placed on administrative reassignment, as is standard protocol in any officer-involved shooting. While the incident remains under internal review, NOPD officials have indicated that preliminary findings suggest Officer Noel acted in line with department guidelines.
Police Chief Shaun Ferguson addressed the incident during a press briefing, stating that the department takes every officer-involved shooting seriously but also stands by its personnel when they act appropriately under pressure. "The safety of our officers and the public is our top priority," Ferguson said. "From the information we've reviewed, Officer Noel handled a volatile and dangerous situation with professionalism."
Chief Ferguson added that Officer Noel is expected to return to his regular patrol duties once the internal investigation is complete. The NOPD’s Public Integrity Bureau and the Force Investigation Team are currently overseeing the review process to ensure transparency and accountability.
The incident at the Caesars Superdome serves as another reminder of the unpredictable challenges law enforcement officers face, particularly when dealing with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health issues, or past trauma. Community advocates have renewed calls for increased mental health services and non-lethal de-escalation training for officers.s the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with additional video or witness accounts from the scene to come forward to assist in the final review.
