Nashville, Tennessee — June 9, 2025

At approximately 8:44 a.m. on Monday, June 9, 2025, a concerned citizen called 911 to report a man walking along Driftwood Street near Hermitage Avenue in East Nashville. According to the caller, the individual was openly carrying a firearm in his hand and appeared visibly distraught and unstable. The report was treated with urgency by dispatchers due to the potential danger to the public.

Sergeant Robert Weaver, a 27-year veteran of the Metro Nashville Police Department and the community coordinator for the Hermitage Precinct, heard the dispatch over the radio. Being nearby at the time, Sergeant Weaver quickly responded to the location in hopes of intercepting the suspect before the situation escalated or innocent bystanders were harmed.

Shortly after, Sergeant Weaver spotted the man walking on Hermitage Avenue in the direction of downtown Nashville. The armed man was holding the firearm in a low-ready position but made no immediate aggressive moves. Sergeant Weaver began following him from a short distance while remaining in his patrol vehicle, using his loudspeaker to give multiple verbal commands, instructing the suspect to drop the weapon.

Despite the repeated commands, the man did not comply. Instead, he continued walking steadily, visibly ignoring the officer's instructions. Concerned for public safety, Sergeant Weaver exited his vehicle to attempt to de-escalate the situation on foot and continue issuing commands more directly. The situation took a critical turn when the man suddenly turned toward Sergeant Weaver and began charging at him while still holding the firearm in his hand.

Faced with an imminent threat, Sergeant Weaver drew his service weapon and fired three rounds at the suspect in rapid succession. The man was struck and fell to the ground. Officers nearby were immediately alerted and medical assistance was called to the scene within minutes. Paramedics arrived shortly thereafter and rendered emergency aid before transporting the suspect to a local hospital.

Despite medical efforts, the suspect was pronounced dead at the hospital later that morning. Police reported that the man carried no identification on him at the time of the incident. Investigators are currently working to confirm his identity by running his fingerprints through national databases and checking any possible connections to missing persons or prior law enforcement interactions.

The area around Hermitage Avenue was temporarily closed off for several hours as homicide detectives and crime scene investigators processed the scene. Body-worn camera footage from Sergeant Weaver and any nearby surveillance video are being reviewed as part of the standard protocol for officer-involved shootings. The Metro Nashville Police Department has also notified the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, which has launched an independent review of the use of force.

In a statement later that afternoon, a department spokesperson emphasized that Sergeant Weaver attempted to resolve the situation peacefully and gave numerous commands for the suspect to drop his weapon. The suspect’s decision to charge at the officer while armed left little time for alternative responses. No officers or civilians were injured during the incident.

Community members expressed sadness over the outcome, with some residents noting that the man appeared mentally unwell, based on his behavior prior to the confrontation. Police have not yet confirmed whether the firearm was loaded or if the suspect fired any shots, though investigators did recover the weapon at the scene.

Sergeant Weaver has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, as is department policy in all officer-involved shootings. Authorities are also working to determine whether the suspect had any known history of mental illness or previous interactions with law enforcement.

As of now, the identity of the deceased remains unknown, and the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the confrontation is ongoing.
