Man Shot After Pointing Airsoft Rifle at Cedar Rapids Police Officer

Cedar Rapids, Iowa — April 6, 2024

A fatal officer-involved shooting in Cedar Rapids has been ruled legally justified by the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, following a detailed investigation into the death of 40-year-old David Vanderhamm. The tragic series of events unfolded over several hours on April 6, 2024, beginning with a family’s plea for help during a mental health crisis., asking for assistance in transporting her son, David Vanderhamm, to the hospital for a mental health evaluation. The caller, Vanderhamm’s mother, reported that her son had become increasingly violent and paranoid, and she expressed concern that he had access to a firearm.

Two Cedar Rapids police officers responded to the residence. Upon arrival, they were able to speak with Vanderhamm, who initially agreed to be taken to the hospital for evaluation. However, once at the hospital, Vanderhamm abruptly changed his mind, refused treatment, and left the facility, returning home.

Later that day, at 6:37 p.m., Vanderhamm began calling 911 repeatedly, requesting that law enforcement return to his residence. During these calls, he made threatening and disturbing statements, including his desire to fight officers, his intent to kill, and expressions of self-loathing, claiming that he was a junkie who didn’t deserve to live.

In the background of one of the 911 calls, his mother could be heard pleading with him, saying, “David don’t. David don’t.” Vanderhamm then chillingly stated, “Headshot, I’m not aiming for knees,” indicating his intent to use lethal force. The dispatcher alerted officers that Vanderhamm appeared increasingly unstable and dangerous.

Shortly after, officers learned that Vanderhamm and his stepfather had left the residence and were walking toward a nearby area that included several apartment buildings and businesses. Vanderhamm was reportedly carrying a gun, and a responding officer observed him smashing his phone on the ground, further demonstrating erratic behavior. As law enforcement located Vanderhamm, they issued multiple commands instructing him to drop the weapon. Vanderhamm refused, instead responding with expletives and aggressive language, escalating the situation. When he raised the firearm and pointed it directly at a police sergeant, three officers responded by discharging their weapons.

Vanderhamm was struck by multiple gunshots and was pronounced dead at the scene. Tragically, his stepfather, who had been with him during the confrontation, was also struck twice during the exchange of gunfire. He was rushed to a local hospital and survived his injuries after receiving immediate treatment.

Following the incident, officers secured the scene and recovered the weapon. It was later determined that Vanderhamm had been carrying an airsoft rifle, a type of realistic-looking replica firearm often used in recreational shooting but capable of being mistaken for a real weapon, especially in high-stress scenarios.

On July 15, 2024, the Iowa Attorney General’s Office released its findings, concluding that the use of deadly force by the three Cedar Rapids officers involved was legally justified. The report emphasized that Vanderhamm posed a clear and immediate threat to the lives of the officers and others in the area, particularly after aiming what appeared to be a lethal weapon at law enforcement.police response

, and the challenges officers face when dealing with individuals who are both mentally unwell and potentially armed. While the investigation is officially closed, city leaders and advocates have called for greater mental health support and resources to prevent future tragedies of a similar nature.
