Hollister, California — Knife-Wielding Man Shot After Confrontation with Police

On the morning of December 16, 2020, officers from the Hollister Police Department responded to a tense and dangerous situation involving a knife-wielding man who allegedly threatened his family and officers during a disturbance at a residence on Kimberly Court. The confrontation ended when one officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect, who survived and was later taken into custody.

The incident began around 7:30 a.m., when SCR911 received a hang-up 911 call from a home located in the 1100 block of Kimberly Court. When dispatchers attempted to call back, a family member answered and requested urgent help. The caller explained that an adult male in the home was acting violently and had access to kitchen knives, raising immediate concerns for everyone's safety.

Two Hollister police officers were dispatched to the location and arrived promptly. Upon arrival, they made contact with concerned family members outside the home. As officers were speaking with the relatives, the suspect—later identified as 29-year-old Brandon Hill—suddenly approached. Officers noted that he refused to remove his hands from his pockets, which immediately raised a red flag about his intentions or possible possession of a weapon.

The officers attempted to speak with Hill inside the residence, but he quickly became uncooperative and agitated. During the interaction, Hill produced a large knife, escalating the danger of the situation. He then deliberately started a fire by turning on the stove and placing flammable items directly onto the ignited burner, creating an immediate fire hazard in addition to the threat of violence.

Hill positioned himself between the officers and the fire, effectively blocking them from extinguishing the flames or safely withdrawing. He then began to throw various objects at the officers, including one burning item, demonstrating a clear intent to harm. The situation became increasingly volatile as the suspect continued to throw furniture and household items around the room while yelling threats at both officers.

Despite the officers' efforts to de-escalate the situation, including giving repeated verbal commands and attempting to calm Hill, he refused to comply. With the suspect still holding a knife and actively threatening the safety of the officers and others in the home, one officer was forced to act in defense. He fired a single round from his service weapon, which struck Hill in the abdomen.

After the shot was fired, Hill dropped the knife, allowing officers to quickly move in and secure him. They immediately began providing first aid to control the bleeding and stabilize him until paramedics arrived. Hill was then transported to a trauma hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. His condition was later listed as stable.

Later that evening, Hill was medically cleared by hospital staff and released into police custody. Officers from the Hollister Police Department transported him to the San Benito County Jail, where he was formally booked. Hill now faces multiple felony charges, including arson, assault with a deadly weapon, threatening a peace officer, resisting arrest, and criminal threats. His bail was set at $196,000, according to jail officials.

The Hollister Police Department has not reported any injuries to officers during the incident. The case remains under investigation, and the department will review all body camera footage and witness statements as part of its standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.

This incident underscores the unpredictable nature of domestic disturbance calls and the challenges officers face when attempting to resolve dangerous situations without the use of force.
