Chicago Cops Shoot Man Who Charged Them With a Knife
Chicago, Illinois — On May 5, 2025, a violent confrontation unfolded inside an assisted living facility, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. Chicago Police responded to a 911 call reporting a person armed with a knife inside the residence. Upon arrival, officers entered the building and made contact with the suspect, later identified as 47-year-old Alfonzo Wright, inside his apartment unit.
According to the Chicago Police Department, Wright was visibly armed with a knife when officers found him. Police stated that officers immediately began trying to de-escalate the situation using verbal commands in an attempt to calm Wright and get him to surrender. Despite repeated efforts, Wright allegedly refused to comply and continued behaving aggressively.
After verbal tactics failed, officers deployed their tasers in an effort to subdue him non-lethally. However, police say the tasers were ineffective, and Wright continued to resist. At a critical moment, Wright reportedly charged toward one of the officers while swinging the knife. Fearing for their safety and the safety of others in the facility, two officers discharged their service weapons.
Wright was struck multiple times by gunfire. Emergency personnel were called to the scene, but Wright was pronounced dead on-site due to his injuries. The confrontation lasted only a few minutes, but left behind lasting consequences for all involved.
Inside the same apartment, officers discovered another man, later identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as 58-year-old Keith Harding. Authorities say Harding had sustained multiple stab wounds to his neck and arm and was already deceased by the time police arrived. Investigators believe Harding was killed by Wright before police entered the apartment.
The scene was secured, and detectives from the department’s Bureau of Detectives, along with the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), began an investigation into the incident. Police recovered a knife from the apartment, which they believe was the weapon used both in the alleged murder of Harding and in the confrontation with officers.
Neither of the officers involved in the shooting was injured, according to the police department. Their names have not yet been publicly released. As is protocol in officer-involved shootings, both officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of internal and independent investigations. COPA is expected to review body-worn camera footage, physical evidence, and witness statements to determine whether the use of deadly force complied with department policies and legal standards.
The tragedy has brought renewed attention to the challenges police face in responding to calls involving individuals with weapons, particularly in environments like assisted living facilities where vulnerable residents are present. Community members and advocacy groups have expressed concern about the circumstances that led to the fatal use of force, as well as the need for continued training in crisis intervention and de-escalation tactics.
Meanwhile, the families of both Wright and Harding are left grappling with a situation that escalated into deadly violence. The motive behind the stabbing of Keith Harding remains under investigation, and officials have not yet provided further details about the relationship between the two men or what may have led to the attack.
As the investigation continues, city officials and oversight bodies are urging patience while the facts are thoroughly examined. The outcome of the reviews may have implications for future policy decisions regarding how police interact with armed individuals in emotionally or mentally charged situations, particularly in sensitive environments like residential care facilities.
