Bodycam Videos From Fatal Police Shooting in Louisville, Kentucky

The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) has released additional details regarding a recent officer-involved shooting that occurred late Saturday night in South Louisville. The incident, which left one man dead and an officer injured, unfolded inside a vacant home on Oleanda Avenue shortly after 11:30 p.m.

According to LMPD Chief Steve Conrad, the individual killed was 32-year-old William A. Young Jr. Police say Young was hiding inside the home and was shot after attacking an officer with an object that resembled a meat skewer. The confrontation took place as officers were conducting a search of the residence.

Chief Conrad explained that officers had responded to the vacant home following reports of suspicious activity. Upon entering, the officers began to clear the building, moving cautiously through the structure and announcing their presence multiple times as they advanced. As the officers made their way to the second floor, they encountered Young, who was reportedly crouched behind a wall in what appeared to be an ambush position.

At that moment, according to Conrad, Young lunged at one of the officers—identified as Officer Russell Braun—and struck him in the chest with a pointed object. In the chaos that followed, Braun fell backward and, according to preliminary findings, accidentally discharged his weapon, shooting himself in the hand. The injury, combined with the chest impact, required medical attention. Braun was transported to University of Louisville Hospital, treated for his wounds, and later released.

During the struggle, Officers Braun, Paige Young (no relation to the suspect), and possibly Officer Randall Richardson opened fire on William Young Jr. The suspect was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. It remains unclear how many rounds were fired or how many officers’ bullets struck Young. A full forensic investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events.

Chief Conrad emphasized that the officers involved repeatedly identified themselves as law enforcement and issued commands as they moved through the residence. He noted that Young’s decision to hide and attack without warning raised the level of threat and justified a heightened tactical response.

Despite the department’s initial findings, Conrad stated that the investigation remains active and ongoing. The LMPD’s Public Integrity Unit is currently reviewing the incident to determine whether the use of deadly force was warranted. If the unit concludes that any of the officers violated protocol or acted unlawfully, the case may be referred to a grand jury for possible criminal charges.

Additionally, the case will undergo a secondary review by the Citizens Commission on Police Accountability, an independent oversight body tasked with evaluating incidents involving police use of force. The commission’s findings will help inform future decisions about policy and training, and ensure transparency in the aftermath of critical incidents.

In the meantime, Officers Braun, Paige Young, and Richardson have all been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. The department has not released body camera footage or additional audio evidence from the incident, but officials indicated that more information may be made public as the investigation progresses.

The shooting of William Young Jr. marks another moment of heightened scrutiny for the LMPD, as communities across the country continue to demand accountability and transparency in law enforcement. As investigations continue, local leaders and community members will be watching closely for the outcome of both the internal review and any potential legal proceedings.

Chief Conrad concluded his public statement by reaffirming the department’s commitment to a thorough and impartial investigation. “We owe it to our officers, the families involved, and the community to get this right,” he said. “Every incident involving the use of deadly force is serious, and we will follow the evidence wherever it leads.”
