Albuquerque Officer Shoots Man After He Points Fake Gun

On July 4, 2025, at approximately 12:20 p.m., Albuquerque Police Department officers were dispatched to a residence on the 2100 block of South Branch Drive SW. The call came from 21-year-old Jerry Baldonado, who requested assistance with a family-related dispute. During the call, Baldonado mentioned that his brother had possessed a firearm the day prior. Officers arrived at the location to investigate the report and assess the situation.

Officer Dominic Sanchez was among the responding officers. According to official statements and later-released body camera footage, Sanchez approached the home and loudly announced twice that he was a police officer. As he reached the front of the house, Baldonado opened the door. In his hand was what appeared to be a black handgun. Without knowing it was not a real firearm, Officer Sanchez reacted quickly, firing three shots in response to the perceived threat. Baldonado was struck in the arm, leg, and abdomen.

Further examination revealed that the weapon Baldonado pointed was actually an airsoft BB gun—a replica capable of closely resembling a real handgun. According to police accounts, the officers on scene believed the gun to be real, particularly given Baldonado's behavior. Body camera footage confirmed that Baldonado smiled as he pointed the object and shifted it between his hands. The video also captured a woman inside the residence shouting that the gun was not real, but officers later stated they did not hear her warning during the chaotic moment.

Baldonado survived the shooting and was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in recovery. His condition has stabilized, though he is still receiving treatment for the injuries sustained. The case has drawn attention not only because of the use of force but also due to Baldonado’s documented mental health history. Police reports indicate that Baldonado has a developmental disability and a prior history of interactions with law enforcement. On several occasions, he had made erratic or misleading 911 calls, including one instance where he falsely claimed he had been shot.

The Albuquerque Police Department has launched an internal investigation into the incident, which is also being reviewed by an external oversight agency. Authorities aim to determine whether Officer Sanchez acted in accordance with department protocol and whether the shooting meets legal standards for the use of deadly force. Investigators are also examining whether the officers had prior knowledge of Baldonado’s mental health status, and how that may have influenced their response.

Community advocates and watchdog groups have called for transparency and accountability in the investigation. They emphasize the need for law enforcement to be adequately trained in dealing with individuals with developmental or mental health disorders. Some have expressed concern over the rapid escalation of force, especially in cases involving vulnerable individuals. The case has prompted renewed calls for mental health crisis intervention teams to be more directly involved in police responses where a caller has a known psychiatric history.

As the investigation continues, no formal charges have been filed against Officer Sanchez or Baldonado. Officials have not commented on whether disciplinary action may be taken. The department has assured the public that body camera footage, evidence, and witness statements will all be carefully reviewed. Meanwhile, Baldonado’s family has not issued a public statement, though sources close to them say they are focused on his recovery and hope for a thorough, impartial review of the incident.

This shooting adds to the growing national conversation about how law enforcement engages with people who have mental health conditions, particularly during moments of confusion or distress. As the community awaits the outcome of the investigation, many are watching closely to see what lessons, if any, will be learned from the encounter on South Branch Drive.
