Houston Police Officers Shoot Suspect Who Reached For Gun
Houston, Texas — May 17, 2025
On the morning of May 17, 2025, officers with the Houston Police Department were dispatched to the scene of a three-vehicle traffic accident along the 10300 block of the North Freeway. The incident was initially reported as a minor crash, and upon arrival, officers observed that two of the involved vehicles had remained at the scene. However, a third vehicle had fled the area before police arrived.
After quickly assessing the situation, officers assisted in relocating the two remaining vehicles to a safer area off the freeway to prevent further disruption to traffic and ensure safety. Simultaneously, police put out a general broadcast over the radio, alerting nearby units to be on the lookout for the third vehicle—described as a green SUV suspected of fleeing the crash scene.
Not long after the broadcast, additional patrol units from the Northbelt Division located a vehicle matching the description of the fleeing SUV in a nearby neighborhood. Officers conducted a traffic stop and made initial contact with the driver. Their intent was to detain the individual for questioning and proceed with a routine crash investigation.
However, the encounter quickly escalated. As officers approached and attempted to detain the suspect, the man lifted his shirt, exposing a firearm tucked into the waistband of his pants. Before officers could act further, the suspect reached for the weapon and managed to pull it out, presenting an imminent threat to the officers on scene.
In response to the armed threat, two Houston Police Department officers discharged their duty weapons, firing multiple rounds and striking the suspect. The officers immediately called for emergency medical services and began to administer first aid to the man while awaiting the arrival of paramedics from the Houston Fire Department.
Despite their efforts, the suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding paramedics. His identity has not yet been confirmed, and officials have stated that verification is pending with the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
At the time of the incident, no officers were reported injured. A firearm believed to belong to the suspect was recovered at the scene, confirming the officers’ account that the man had drawn a weapon during the encounter. The Houston Police Department has not yet released the names of the officers involved but has confirmed that standard protocols are being followed, including the placement of the officers on administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation.
Body-worn camera footage from the incident will be reviewed as part of the department’s internal investigation, and the Houston Police Special Investigations Unit, along with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, will be overseeing the case to determine whether the use of force was justified.
This incident highlights the unpredictable nature of seemingly routine law enforcement calls, such as crash investigations, which can quickly evolve into life-threatening situations. As the community awaits further details, officials have called for patience while the facts are gathered and reviewed.
More information, including the identity of the deceased and body camera footage, is expected to be released in the coming weeks, pending the conclusion of the initial investigation and notification of next of kin.
