Houston, Texas — The Houston Police Department (HPD) has released body camera footage from a recent officer-involved shooting that took place earlier this month outside a gas station in southeast Houston. The footage captures a dangerous exchange of gunfire that left an officer wounded and a suspect facing multiple felony charges. The shooting occurred on Wednesday, May 4, around 11:20 a.m. at a gas station located in the 14300 block of Gulf Freeway (South Interstate Highway 45). The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Jimmy Bryan, was taken into custody and has been formally charged with two counts of aggravated assault of a public servant. The charges were filed in the 338th State District Court.According to HPD, the incident began as part of a multi-agency narcotics investigation in the area. Members of the HPD Narcotics Division were working alongside other units, including the HPD Highway Interdiction Unit, when they identified Bryan as a person of interest. Officers initiated a traffic stop as Bryan pulled into a gas station.

As the officers approached the vehicle, they made contact with Bryan and asked him to step out of the car. Without warning, Bryan allegedly produced a firearm and opened fire on the officers at close range. Multiple shots were fired during the exchange.

Officer J. Sallee, one of the officers on the scene, was struck by gunfire in the lower pelvic area. Despite being injured, Sallee managed to return fire alongside his partner, Officer M. McMurtry, who was not injured during the incident. Both officers discharged their service weapons in response to the gunfire from the suspect.Bodycam Captures a Man Pulling Out a Pistol And Opening Fire On Officers

The officers’ quick reaction likely prevented further injuries or fatalities. Bryan was struck by return fire and injured. Officer Sallee, though wounded, was transported to Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital via a private vehicle. He was later reported to be in stable condition. Houston Fire Department paramedics transported Bryan to a local hospital, where he was also listed in stable condition.

Both Officer Sallee and Officer McMurtry have been with the department since June 2012 and are currently assigned to the Traffic Enforcement Division. According to HPD, they are experienced officers with a strong record of service. The department has not yet confirmed how many rounds were fired during the shootout.

The HPD Special Investigations Unit, led by Sergeant R. Flores and Detectives A. Hurtado and R. Anderson, is overseeing the ongoing investigation. As part of standard procedure, body-worn camera footage from the incident has been reviewed and partially released to the public. The footage shows the moments leading up to the shooting, including officers issuing commands and the sudden gunfire exchange.

HPD Chief Troy Finner addressed the incident in a public statement, emphasizing the dangers that officers face during routine law enforcement actions. “What began as a controlled narcotics operation quickly turned into a life-threatening encounter,” he said. “Our officers acted with courage and professionalism in a very dangerous situation.”Officials also noted the importance of inter-agency coordination in large-scale investigations. The operation that led to Bryan’s arrest involved multiple law enforcement partners, and the quick medical response ensured that both the officer and the suspect received prompt treatment.

The suspect, Jimmy Bryan, remains in custody as he recovers from his injuries. His charges are considered serious felonies, and if convicted, he could face significant prison time. Investigators are continuing to review the full scope of the narcotics operation to determine whether additional charges may be filed.
